Ramón Reyes: From Passion to Legacy in Honduran Coffee

Awakening a Calling

For Ramón Reyes, coffee wasn’t just a family heritage, it became a lifelong calling. In 2002, he immersed himself in the world of coffee cultivation, moving beyond tradition and into hands-on experience. He learned every detail of agronomic management and wet processing, experiencing firsthand the transformation from cherry to bean. This was the beginning of a journey defined by curiosity, discipline, and passion for quality.

Crafting Quality and Consistency

Ramón quickly realized that producing great coffee is never an accident. Instead, it comes from a meticulous and intentional process. He adopted an artisanal approach to cultivation and processing which were rooted harmoniously with the land, the plant, and the people who care for it. His philosophy is simple but powerful: every cup should reflect dedication, balance, and respect for nature.

Building a Sustainable Future

While mastering cultivation, Ramón faced the reality that many producers in Honduras shared: low prices alone could not sustain a farm or its workers. From 2002 to 2006, he pursued advanced training at the prestigious School for Coffee Farm Administrators. This experience transformed his vision, pushing him to integrate social, environmental, and agronomic sustainability into his operations.

His efforts paid off, earning the farm the 5C sustainability certification which is a mark of responsibility and care. He implemented real changes, such as:
- Restructuring coffee plots for better cultivation.
- Planting timber species that supported local ecosystems.
- Launching soil, flora, and fauna conservation programs.
- Improving worker pay and treatment, placing human dignity at the center of production.

A Professional Taster and Innovator

By 2006, Ramón was ready to push beyond farming. He joined a grassroots Producers’ Network, working to innovate and strengthen community production. Soon after, he discovered an opportunity that would reshape his career: training as a 5-Star Professional Taster through IHCAFE.

In 2009, after rigorous evaluations, he officially began his journey as a cupper. This new role not only sharpened his technical expertise but also expanded his global perspective. By visiting cooperatives and companies worldwide, Ramón gained a deep understanding of how to elevate Honduran coffee on the world stage.

Growing Globally

In 2010, Ramón joined the IHCAFE team, a move that introduced him to international markets and proved that quality and consistency were the keys to long-term success. Inspired, he began exporting his own specialty beans. By 2012, his farm was producing new varieties with incredible cup potential, successfully breaking into the Australian and Japanese markets.

As demand for his coffee grew, Ramón relocated to San Pedro Sula, a major industrial hub. Though farther from his family’s farm, he stayed deeply connected through remote oversight and constant innovation. Today, he continues to balance tradition with modern strategy, ensuring his legacy adapts to a globalized and competitive industry.
